A Permanent Home for the Nassau Straw Market
Posted by: Nassau Paradise Island on March 29, 2012
Bargain shoppers and price hagglers rejoice: Nassau’s world-famous Straw Market is re-born, proudly standing where the original market once stood. Gone are the days of crowded, narrow aisles under the great white tarp on Bay Street at the harbourfront.
The new and improved $12 million Straw Market opened its doors on December 16, 2011. Located on Bay Street at the foot of Market Street, the new market is designed to accommodate approximately 400 booths with vendors selling traditional straw-craft souvenirs, handcrafted merchandise, and the hundreds of items in between that tourists have come to know and love. But the fun doesn’t stop there. The Straw Market also features a 4,500-square-foot mezzanine, over 30 specialty booths, ATMs, public restrooms and even a wireless system so vendors can accept credit cards.
The new Straw Market has also gone the extra mile to ensure the very best of shopping experiences for both visitors and residents alike. With wide aisles and the new expanded space, you’ll have no trouble making your way through the hundreds of stands owned and operated by local Bahamians, who are always ready and willing to strike a bargain. The only problem you may have is fitting everything in your suitcase!
