Yes, it’s official. Nassau has now added yet another claim to fame in being recognized as one of the Top 10 Beach Destinations in the Caribbean. Recently awarded by the 2012 Travelers’ Choice Awards, this prestigious honor was based on the millions of reviews and opinions posted on TripAdvisor by travelers from around the world.
Bargain shoppers and price hagglers rejoice: Nassau’s world-famous Straw Market is re-born, proudly standing where the original market once stood. Gone are the days of crowded, narrow aisles under the great white tarp on Bay Street at the harbourfront.
The new and improved $12 million Straw Market opened its doors on December 16, 2011. Located on Bay Street at the foot of Market Street, the new market is designed to accommodate approximately 400 booths with vendors selling traditional straw-craft souvenirs, handcrafted merchandise, and the hundreds of items in between that tourists have come to know and love. But the fun doesn’t stop there. The Straw Market also features a 4,500-square-foot mezzanine, over 30 specialty booths, ATMs, public restrooms and even a wireless system so vendors can accept credit cards.
