Bahamas Family Vacation Tips & Ideas
Posted by: Nassau Paradise Island on July 30, 2014
Traveling as a family can be a bit of a challenge. From navigating airport terminals with kids in tow to trying to keep everyone happy, you may consider your long-awaited family vacation more “work” than an actual getaway. That’s why traveling to The Bahamas is different—we make it so easy for your family to relax and enjoy paradise from glorious start to fabulous finish!
Here are some great tips and ideas (plus good-to-know information) to help you plan your next trip to Nassau Paradise Island.
1. We’re closer we than you think
Travel time to and from a destination can occasionally prove daunting for families. You have to worry about keeping the kids entertained, getting to and from gates, and ensuring that your luggage makes it from plane to plane. But getting to Nassau Paradise Island is easier than you think!
At just 179 miles off the coast of Florida, and only a 45-minute flight from Miami, we’re one of the closest Caribbean vacation destinations for you to explore. Plus with daily non-stop flights to Nassau from major U.S. and Canadian cities, making connections is convenient and flights are a breeze. Hop on a plane in the morning, and be walking on the beach by the afternoon—that’s how close we are! Want to see how simple it is? Use our interactive map and flight finder to help you find the best trip option for you and your family.
Did you know?
Flying is even better from The Bahamas, too, because once your family dream vacation is over, we make getting home easier and more convenient!
Nassau Paradise Island is one of only three Caribbean countries that provides pre-clearance for U.S. Customs and Immigration services. Clear U.S. Customs and Immigration in Nassau when leaving The Bahamas for the United States, and bypass the long U.S. Customs and Immigration clearance line when you land. Get off the plane, grab your luggage, and head on home (or catch your connection quicker)—no fuss, no muss. Just another perk about traveling to and from The Bahamas!
2. Travel apps for traveling to The Bahamas
Speaking about getting on planes, how about an app to guide you to your gate, or a helpful and shareable packing checklist for the family, plus an interactive map for exploring Atlantis, Paradise Island? There really is an app for everything! Even though you want to unplug when you arrive in paradise, having a helpful hand from good ol’ technology can make your journey to and from The Bahamas even smoother.

4. Pick an activity, any activity!
When you have kids, you’re always on the go, even when you’re on vacation. But sometimes going with the flow isn’t for everyone, especially when you have little (and big) people to think about. So when choosing your next vacation spot, there’s always the challenge of finding a place that combines the right balance between downtime at the beach and engaging kid-friendly activities. However, have no fear because The Bahamas is here!
The Bahamas is a relaxing and exciting vacation spot for everyone. From half-day and full-day boating and snorkeling adventures for parents and kids, to swimming with dolphins and learning about pirates at the Nassau Pirates Museum, we’ve got more than enough to keep the kids distracted—and you relaxed. There’s always something wonderful for families to do in The Bahamas.
5. The other bits and pieces: on-island transportation, currency, and more
Traveling as a family means you probably have to ask a lot of “what if…” and “are there…” questions. “How much does a taxi cost to and from the airport? Can we use our normal phone chargers, or do we need to buy an adapter? Do children stay free?” And the list goes on. Don’t fret though; we’ve got the answers…and here are a few to get you started:
Transportation: Most of the time you can step outside your hotel and find a taxi waiting. Taxis from the Nassau airport are approximately $27 to downtown Nassau. Taxi fares are based on two passengers. (There are additional charges for extra people and luggage.)
Currency and banking: The Bahamian dollar is equivalent in value to the U.S. dollar. U.S. Currency is also accepted everywhere in Nassau Paradise Island, so no need to spend the extra time (or money) searching out a bank or place to convert your cash. Just grab your wallet and go!
Electricity: If your hairdryer, shaver, phone charger, or other small electrical appliance operates on a standard North American 120-volt/60-cycle AC electrical current, you’re good to go in paradise! So no need to run around from store to store looking for the perfect adapter before your trip—we keep you connected (literally).
Traveling with children: Children under the age of 12 generally stay free in their parent’s room in Nassau Paradise Island, and a number of our hotels and resorts offer children’s programs and scheduled activities as well as babysitting. We also have an array of fun family activities and tours such as the Pirates of Nassau Museum, the famous marching flamingos at Ardastra Gardens & Zoo, and even an interactive chocolate factory tour at Graycliff Hotel!
