Posted by: Nassau Paradise Island on September 18, 2014

In our final blog entry of the three-part series Deliciously Unique Bahamas Tours, we’re going to whet your whistle and quench your thirst for all things relating to rum. Because if you’re visiting Nassau Paradise Island, then John Watling’s Distillery is a must-see (and taste) during your vacation here!

John-Watlings-RumJohn Watling’s Distillery Tour
On this fun and educational tour of a fascinating estate, you’ll sample some terrific locally produced rums and signature cocktails—not to mention have some laughs, meet friendly faces, and mingle with vacationers from all over the world.

John Watling’s complimentary tour starts as soon as you walk through the doors of the stunning Buena Vista Estate, which is decorated with antiques and exhibits dating back more than 300 years. Upon entering this historic home, you’ll be greeted by a friendly guide and happy staff members, all of whom show great pride and delight in the rejuvenation of the Buena Vista Estate as a small batch, hand-crafted rum producer and Bahamian attraction.

Take your senses on an adventure as you explore the storehouse, a huge barn-like building where John Watling’s specialty rums are made and stored. Learn how they are fermented onsite and distilled from freshly pressed sugar cane molasses. See how the rum is bottled the old-fashioned way, using local materials and a traditional English rum-making technique. Breathe in the smell of “Angel’s Share”—the portion of rum lost to evaporation during the many years the rum rests in the barrel—that floats in the air.

Your rum-loving history lesson continues even when it comes down to the owners of John Watling’s Distillery! The five founding members of John Watling’s Distillery are sixth-generation members of a rum-producing family. That’s 175 years of rum-making experience by people who know precisely how great rum should taste. Life truly is better in The Bahamas…especially with local rum!
