Do You Know These Flicks? 5 Movies Made in The Bahamas

Posted by: Nassau Paradise Island on July 7, 2014

We’re known for our beaches, stunning waters, and relaxing attitude, but did you know we’re also a much sought-after filming location? It’s true! From science fiction to infamous pirates and James Bond, The Bahamas has been featured in some of your favorite films—and there are many more blockbuster hits to come. For now, let’s take a look at five flicks you might not have seen that were made right here in The Bahamas:

1. Thunderball (1965)
This movie classic really showcases the beauty (and intrigue!) of paradise. Thunderball, the fourth spy film in the James Bond series, stars Sean Connery as Agent 007. In this outing, 007 is sent to The Bahamas to track down the sinister espionage organization S.P.E.C.T.R.E, and stop them from igniting bombs they planted in the ocean around The Bahamas.

It’s no secret that many James Bond films were shot in The Bahamas, but Thunderball is extra special because one of our famous shipwrecks, Thunderball, was used in the underwater fight scenes. Read our 4 Famous Shipwrecks in The Bahamas blog post to learn about the shipwreck. You can also catch Café Martinique, located in Marina Village at Atlantis, Paradise Island, as a scene in the film. Though it was filmed at a different location in the movie, the Café still exists right here in paradise! Watch the movie trailer below:

2. HELP! (1965)

In HELP!, The Beatles’ second feature film, Ringo finds himself the human sacrificial target of a cult, and his band mates must try to protect him from getting kidnapped. Directed by Richard Lester, the film is shot all over the world, but a good portion of the movie was filmed in The Bahamas. In the clip below, Richard mentions that Brian Epstein, the Beatles Manager, said it was really, really, really important that they shoot in The Bahamas. During the filming, The Beatles stayed at famous Balmoral Club, now known as Sandals Royal Bahamian Spa Resort and Offshore Island. They also dined and smoked cigars at our wonderful Graycliff hotel. 3. Flipper (1996)

This adventure film starring Paul Hogan and Elijah Wood is about a boy who spends his summer with his uncle, and forms a friendship with an orphaned dolphin named Flipper. Even though in the movie the uncle lives in the Florida Keys, most of the shooting was done in The Bahamas. One particular shooting location to mention is the fishing village scenes, which were shot at Stuart Cove’s Dive Bahamas. This is a great movie for the family to watch before heading out on vacation. Make sure to book your spot at Dolphin Cay at Atlantis, Paradise Island to make your own dolphin friends. Watch the Flipper trailer below:

4. After the Sunset (2004)

After the Sunset is an action-comedy film starring Pierce Brosnan as Max Burdett, a master thief who is caught in a cat-and-mouse game with FBI agent Stan Lloyd (played by Woody Harrelson). The majority of the filming was done in The Bahamas, and the filmmakers based their production out of our own Atlantis, Paradise Island resort. Crew from LA, Miami and NYC all flew down and stayed with us during the making of the movie! Is this one to add to your movie list? Check it out here:

5. Pirates of the Caribbean Series (2003, 2006, 2007, 2011, 2016)

This American-British fantasy swashbuckler series has become a smash-hit success all around the world. So successful, that it’s estimated the films have brought in $5.4 billion US worldwide as of 2013. Scenes from The Pirates of the Caribbean series were filmed in The Bahamas; in fact, Johnny Depp, who plays the pirate Jack Sparrow, fell in love with The Bahamas so much, he ended up buying his own private island here. Rumor has it that he’s even going to be getting married in The Bahamas to his fiancé, Amber Heard. Keep an eye out over the coming months for Mr. and Mrs. Depp! Here’s a montage of trailers from four films of the Pirates of the Caribbean series:
