Famous Weddings & A Royal Love Affair in The Bahamas
Posted by: Nassau Paradise Island on April 14, 2014
The Bahamas has always been known as a magical and romantic place full of famous celebrity and royal love stories. Because even though The Beatles sang, “All You Need Is Love,” it doesn’t hurt to have warm weather, stunning beaches and crystal clear blue waters to go with your wedding day or romantic getaway!
Here are four famous love stories about celebrities and members of royalty who spent time or were married in The Bahamas.
Duke & Duchess of Windsor – June 3, 1937
Perhaps one of the most famous love stories of all time, the relationship between Duke and Duchess of Windsor was not always smooth sailing. When American socialite Wallis Simpson and Prince Edward first met in 1931, Wallis was married to another man and Edward was known for being a bit of a playboy, yet they ended up falling madly in love. Their clandestine and increasingly public relationship continued, even after Edward became King Edward VIII upon his father’s death in 1936.
Because Wallis had been previously divorced—and was getting divorced again so she could marry the King—the Royal Family was extremely unhappy. In fact, the Family was so upset that in order for King Edward VIII to marry Wallis, he was told he would have to renounce his throne. And that’s exactly what he did.
On December 10, 1936, King Edward abdicated the throne to his younger brother, George VI, and in a shocking announcement to the public, he stated, “I have found it impossible to carry the heavy burden of responsibility and to discharge my duties as King as I would wish to do without the help and support of the woman I love.” To this day, the King’s abdication speech still melts hearts around the world.
Wallis and Edward were “asked to leave” Great Britain and ended up getting married in France on June 3, 1937—and from that point on, they were given the titles of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. A few years after their wedding, they moved to Nassau where Edward served as Governor of The Bahamas. During their time in Nassau they spent many nights wining and dining with famous politicians and celebrities at the renowned Balmoral Club, which is now Sandals Royal Bahamian Spa Resort & Offshore Island. The Duke and Duchess enjoyed five years holding court in Nassau before returning to France, where they lived for the rest of their lives.

Cindy Crawford & Rande Gerber – May 29, 1998
In 1998 supermodel Cindy Crawford married her long time friend and celebrity bar owner, Rande Gerber. The couple tied the knot right on Cabbage Beach and spent their wedding night in a four-bedroom villa at One&Only Ocean Club on Nassau Paradise Island. Their wedding guests had access to an infinity pool, private courtyard, a 24-hour personal host and housekeeper. Wow, what a treat, we would have loved to be on that guest list!
Cindy and Rande have now been married for over 15 years and have two children together. I wonder if they come back to Nassau Paradise Island to celebrate their anniversary every year?
Mariah Carey & Nick Cannon – April 30, 2008
Mariah and Nick first met back in 2005 at the Teen Choice Awards. Three years later they were reunited, and this time love was in the air. What’s really cute is that Nick later admitted that he always had a crush on Mariah but wasn’t ready to make any moves until 2008. Aww!
The couple hid their romance from the public eye for a while, even going as far as having Nick star in Mariah’s “Bye Bye” music video just so they could spend time together. Talk about true diva love! But they couldn’t keep it a secret for long because in that same year the couple flew off to The Bahamas where they had an intimate, wedding with their families and friends at Mariah’s private $4.9 million Bahamian villa. Penelope Cruz & Javier Bardem – July 2010
Did you know that Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem knew each other for over 20 years before they finally said, “I do”? The couple first met during the filming Jamon Jamon, a Spanish film. Penelope was only 19 years old at the time. It wasn’t until 2007 that they decided to give their love a chance, and one year later they starred together in the 2008 movie Vicky Cristina Barcelona.
In 2010 the lovers thought it was finally time to tie the knot, and where’s the best place to do that? Well, we all know weddings are better in The Bahamas. In July of that year Penelope, 36 and Javier, 41, got married at a close friend’s house in The Bahamas. Both stars are known for keeping their personal lives private, so much so that you can’t find an exact wedding date or photos from the wedding online! The only way the public had actual confirmation of the wedding was an email from Penelope’s representative that was sent out to the press to help cool down all the hype.
Rumor has it…Johnny Depp & Amber Heard
New love might be coming to Nassau Paradise Island. Word on the street is that the famous Pirates of the Caribbean Star Johnny Depp and his new fiancé Amber Heard might be getting married in The Bahamas sometime soon! Johnny actually has his own private island in The Bahamas, which is where the couple would get married during a very low-key ceremony. We’ll have to keep our eyes and ears open for any confirmation news. In the meantime, let’s get our cameras out and ready for potential Johnny Depp sightings.
There’s truly nothing more romantic than having your big day on a beautiful beach, surrounded by sparkling turquoise water and everyone close to you celebrating your love and future. Not to mention all the stunning photos you’ll be able take and share on Facebook and Instagram!
