Serious Racing in Paradise

When it comes to describing the Bahamas Speed Week Revival, Douglas Kott of RoadandTrack.com paints a picture as clear as our warm Bahamian waters, “It’s every Corona beer commercial you’ve ever seen…white coral sand, turquoise water, palm fronds rustling in a Caribbean breeze, seagulls caw-cawing. Except instead of a suntanned couple in beach chairs hoisting a brew, it’s Maseratis, Jaguars, OSCAs and Corvettes thundering down Nassau’s waterfront…” Can you see it? It certainly gives us goose bumps when we think about it.
So, what is all the excitement surrounding the Bahamas Speed Week Revival? This four-day event stems from a racing event that was made popular back in the 1950s and 1960s, and later revived in 2011. Nearly 60 classic and vintage cars from the UK and across the United States will make their way to our Bahamian paradise and race the circuit in Nassau. If you can tear your eyes away from these scintillating, powerful beasts on wheels, you can wine and dine at various events including a Gala Concert and the Miss Speed Week Pageant.
New at this year’s event is the appearance of an original, mint condition 1981 DeLorean, made famous in the Back to the Future trilogy and a charity event that will help fund scholarships through the Auction of Promise. And, following the old saying, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” you’ll still be able to enjoy the Auto Trade Show, the Bay Street Road Show, the Spring Circuit on Arawak Cay, and many more events from last year’s inaugural Speed Week. And, if you’re the driver of one of these thunderous beauties, you can even enjoy lunch at Lyford Cay Golf Club, the posh neighborhood of a certain past Bond-man, Sir Sean Connery!
