Thanks to the warm Gulf Stream currents and balmy tradewinds, The Islands Of The Bahamas are blessed with a semi-tropical climate. Typical temperatures range from 20° to 27° Celsius. Rarely does it climb above 32°C on a midsummer’s day or fall below 15°C on a winter’s night. While we can give no guarantees regarding rain, rainfall is most unlikely from November through April. Water temperatures range from the high 20s in the summer to about 23°C in midwinter.
The American dollar and the Bahamian dollar operate a system of parity where $1(USD) = $1 (BSD). The American dollar is widely accepted throughout Nassau and Paradise Island, as well as major credit cards.
United Kingdom residents may take home a total of £390 of duty-free merchandise. Limitations include two fluid ounces of perfume, a half-pound of tobacco and two litres of table wine. To make travelling easier, pack things you’re going to declare separately and keep all your sales receipts.
The Islands of The Bahamas use standard North American 120 volts/60-cycle AC electrical current, as found in the U.S. and Canada. Travellers from the UK are encouraged to bring a two-pin flat adapter.
English (more British than American) is the national language of The Bahamas and is intertwined with an appealing Bahamian dialect.
The Islands of The Bahamas are located in the Eastern Time Zone (EST) as New York City, Miami, Bogota, Lima, etc. There is a five-hour time difference between the UK and The Bahamas (GMT-5).
Restaurants and hotels automatically add 15% to all food and beverage checks in lieu of gratuity. Bellboys, doormen and porters usually receive £1.25 per bag. Taxi drivers should be tipped about 15% of the fare.
Telephone / Television / Internet Access
Many hotels and resorts offer satellite TV services and international telephone services. You can buy prepaid calling cards for national or international calls at different locations of the Bahamas. The international roaming charges apply to mobile phones according to the plan that everyone has in their home country. It is advisable to check with your mobile provider before travelling. Many hotels and resorts also provide high-speed Internet access.
When renting a car, visitors may use their UK licence for up to three months and may also apply for an international driving licence. The minimum age for driving a rental car in The Bahamas is 25. Please note that driving in Nassau Paradise Island is on the left side of the road. Taxi service is also readily available throughout Nassau Paradise Island, and rates are based on predetermined areas, the transport of two passengers and there will be a charge for additional passengers and luggage. It is also possible to use the water taxi, which runs from downtown Nassau to Paradise Island.
What To Wear
Casual spring and summer dress is appropriate throughout the year. For dining in more elegant/upscale restaurants, casinos and some nightclubs, you will need dress shirts, slacks or dresses. Bathing suits are acceptable only on the beach, pool and poolside dining, not on the streets or in restaurants.
Uk Citizen Entry Requirements
Citizens of the United Kingdom do not require visas for The Bahamas. To enter The Bahamas, all travellers must have the following documents:
- Passports, valid for at least six (6) months from the date of application of visa, and valid for the duration of stay in The Bahamas;
- A return or onward ticket;
- Documentation (visa, re-entry permits, etc.) to enter a country other than The Bahamas for which one is ticketed;
- Sufficient funds to finance the visit to The Bahamas;
- Evidence of accommodation for the duration of the trip

To be wed in The Islands Of The Bahamas, couples must be in residence for 24 hours prior to applying for a marriage license. Birth certificates and a notarized affidavit are required. If appropriate, you’ll also need divorce papers, death certificate of a former spouse and parental consent if under the age of 18.
