When it comes to authentic Bahamian dishes, conch tops the list. Conch is considered to be “the” food of The Bahamas, so be sure to give it a try when you visit! Conch meat can be eaten many different ways: raw in salads, deep-fried as fritters, in chowders and gumbos, and even in burgers. Here in Nassau Paradise Island, you’re most likely to find conch fritters on the menu, which can be enjoyed on their own for a light meal, as an appetizer, or as a side dish with a salad, rice, or fries.
While nothing beats enjoying a feast of conch fritters with a side of warm ocean breezes and a Caribbean view, you can also prepare them at home. Here’s our favorite conch fritter recipe. Get cooking, and treat yourself to the flavors of The Bahamas without getting on a plane!
- 1 quart oil for frying
- ¾ cup all-purpose flour
- 1 egg
- ½ cup milk
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- Cayenne pepper, to taste
- 1 cup chopped conch meat (substitute lobster if conch is unavailable)
- ½ medium white onion, chopped
- ½ green pepper, chopped
- 2 stalks celery, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, chopped
In a large pot or deep fryer, heat oil to 365°F. Mix the flour, egg, and milk in a large bowl. Season with salt, pepper, and cayenne pepper. Mix in the chopped conch meat, onion, green pepper, celery, and garlic until well blended. Drop rounded tablespoons of the mixture into the hot oil and fry until golden brown. Drain on paper towels. Serve with ketchup, mayonnaise, or your choice of dipping sauce on the side.
