Sun Safety Tips in Nassau Paradise Island

Stay Safe in the Sun in Nassau Paradise Island

The Bahamas is home to perfectly warm weather year-round and is one of the best destinations to enjoy the pristine azure ocean and immaculate beaches. However, even in Paradise, it’s essential to be mindful of the sun. So be prepared and informed on how to best enjoy your sunny escape on Nassau Paradise Island by reading some of our sun safety tips for your Bahamian vacation.

Sunscreen Forever

This might seem like a no-brainer, but you’d be surprised how many people try going without sunscreen when visiting sunny destinations. But, trust us, sunscreen is essential — especially in Paradise. Pack a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, although higher is always preferred.

Perhaps the most important aspect of wearing sunscreen is to pay attention to all the instructions on your sunscreen bottle. Some sunscreens advise that you apply 10-15 minutes before heading out for the day, as they need time to settle into your skin. Others might require you to reapply after water exposure or if you’ve been sweating. Always check your sunscreen’s expiration date before you pack it, and when swimming in the ocean, make sure you’re using a reef-safe sunscreen.

Coral reefs are some of the most diverse ecosystems on the planet. Their health and survival are linked to our own. Unfortunately, sunscreen pollution poses a real threat to the health of reefs and, by extension, all aquatic life. Reef-safe sunscreens are free of oxybenzone and octinoxate, two common UV-blocking chemicals. Studies have shown these chemicals can lead to coral bleaching. It’s important to prioritize using mineral-based sunscreens with ingredients not associated with coral bleaching, such as zinc oxide and titanium oxide.

We recommend Sun Bum’s mineral sunscreen lotion with SPF 50. It has a completely vegan formula, is hypoallergenic, certified reef safe, and is available in most drugstores throughout North America. All Good Sport Sunscreen is an excellent reef-safe sunscreen alternative if you’re planning on spending long periods in the water. This formula will last up to 80 minutes in the water without reapplying.

Remember to always use sunscreen alongside plenty of shade, clothing, and hats — not instead of them!

Keep Informed, Check the UV Index

It’s a good idea to check the UV index of wherever you are vacationing or living before heading out for the day. On days when the UV index reaches three (which is considered ‘moderate’ or more), you need to be extra diligent in protecting yourself and your skin. Most smartphone weather applications will be able to tell you your location’s UV index. Remember, sun rays can still penetrate clouds and cause sunburns when it’s overcast outside.

Cover Everything Up!

It may seem counterintuitive to cover up during your beach vacation, but clothes can protect you from the sun better than sunscreen.

Cover up as much of your skin as you are comfortable with clothing that is made of breathable and tightly woven fabric. Of course, it’s always good to keep the sun out of your face by packing a wide-brimmed hat for your beachside vacation. Other options include a bucket hat, baseball cap, or even a visor.

Protect your eyes from the sun by using sunglasses; the bigger, the better. They will also protect the delicate skin around your eyes. Most sunglasses sold in North America offer protection from UV rays. Still, be sure to check before packing your sunnies.

Keep Hydrated

Bahama mamas are delicious, and we could drink them all day long. Still, it’s essential to remember to drink plenty of cold or room temperature water throughout the day to keep hydrated. A good thing to keep in mind is to hydrate your body before you feel thirst. Cold liquids, especially water, help regulate your body temperature. So consider bringing a water bottle with you on long day trips and sipping on some cold water in between cocktails by the beach.

Avoid Peak Sun Hours

This might be the most helpful tip apart from using good quality sunscreen. It’s a good idea to reduce your time in the sun during peak sun hours. This is typically between 11 a.m and 3 p.m but can vary depending on your destination and time of year.

Remember the UV index tip above? Those same smartphone weather applications can often tell you when the sun is expected to rise and set each day, so check those when planning prolonged excursions outside. Schedule early morning or evening activities to avoid exposing yourself to peak sunny hours. Don’t forget to note what time sunset is, so you can catch those famous Bahamas beachside sunsets!

Seek Shade

When you come to Nassau Paradise Island, you can experience the ultimate beach vacation, even in the shade! During your visit, the number one thing to remember is to be sun smart. Tan responsibly and give yourself plenty of shade by lounging under an umbrella throughout the day if you’re planning on spending long periods at the beach or outside.

Nassau Paradise Island is more than just beaches. However, you can enjoy your Caribbean getaway by partaking in plenty of activities in the shade. Consider losing yourself in the exotic oasis of The Retreat Garden. The luscious native trees here provide plenty of sun protection while you stroll the beautiful gardens.

Check Your Medications

Did you know some medications, such as antibiotics or birth control, might make your skin more vulnerable to the sun and sun exposure symptoms? If you are unsure about your medication increasing sun sensitivity, ask your pharmacist or doctor about it before your trip. If this is the case, don’t fret. Simply take extra sun precautions and be diligent about your sunscreen usage. Consider carrying an umbrella to protect you when shade is not readily available.

Be Sun Smart!

It’s always relaxing and rejuvenating to unwind in the sun’s warmth, but one must do so mindfully. Keeping these tips in mind during your vacation in Paradise will ensure that everyone has a wonderful and safe time during their trip to The Bahamas. Responsible travel is easy and will add to your experience of Nassau Paradise Island.
