Sun, Sand, and Stars: 11th Annual Bahamas International Film Festival

Posted by: Nassau Paradise Island on November 19, 2014

If you’re a movie buff, you won’t want to miss the 11th Annual Bahamas International Film Festival this December. Kicking off December 4 in Nassau, BIFF celebrates a diverse collection of critically acclaimed films from around the world.

Over the past decade, BIFF has showcased more than 600 international films, exposing The Bahamas to an international audience of filmmakers and attracting A-list celebrities including Johnny Depp, Heather Graham, Sir Sean Connery, Laurence Fishburne, and others. In addition to showcasing a unique collection of movies, the event provides a unique cultural experience and education on the past, present, and future of cinema. With so many excellent movie choices, you’ll surely discover your new favorite film at BIFF and perhaps even encounter a movie star or two.

Having trouble deciding which screenings to attend? Here are our top five picks for this year’s must-see BIFF movies:

Like Sunday, Like Rain: Featuring a star-studded cast including Debra Messing, Billie Joe Armstrong, and Leighton Meester, this film has been chosen as the opening night selection on December 4. It’s a beautiful coming-of-age story about an unlikely friendship.

Big in Japan: Buckle up and ride along with rock band Tennis Pro as they embark on a comeback tour in Tokyo. This script is loosely based on actual events and the soundtrack will have you singing along!

The Current: Showcasing adapted athletes, public figures, and athlete ambassadors learning to overcome limitations, you’ll leave this screening feeling uplifted and inspired. Some of the footage was shot here in The Bahamas!

Bis Gleich: In the mood for a dramatic tale, possibly shedding a tear or two? This film is in German with English subtitles, but the themes of love and connection between neighbors resonate in any language.

Caliente’s Demise: A Bahamian submission to the festival, this movie is an interpretation of the folk legend of the Chickcharney, a half-man, half-bird. Don’t miss Caliente’s Demise for lots of laughs and a great introduction to the folklore of The Bahamas.

The 11th Annual Bahamas International Film Festival is taking place December 4-9 in Nassau and December 10-14 in Harbour Island.
